Stamford Police Sgt. Brian Butler said officers responded to a call at Harbor Point at 8:30 p.m. Friday on a call that the man had shot himself.

When officers arrived on scene the man came out of his residence, with a towel wrapped around his hand, clearly bleeding and asking for an ambulance, Butler said.

While waiting for EMS to arrive, an officer helped put a tourniquet on the man’s left arm to help slow the bleeding. The man was transported to Stamford Hospital and then transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital for additional treatment, Butler added.

When officers went inside the apartment they found the gun, a .380 Ruger semi-automatic pistol, and blood all over the apartment, Butler said.

According to the victim, he had been to the gun range earlier in the week and then put the gun in his gun safe. On Friday, he decided to clean the gun and accidentally shot himself.

Police seized the gun and the man's license to carry until the investigation is complete. No charges were filed as of Monday.
